Raise Awareness For Iraq Now…..on this campus!
Starting Thursday night, February 15, EMU students are going to start stirring up the waters on the issues of Iraq. A documentary called "Iraq for Sale" will be showing in Common Grounds at 8pm followed by a candle lit walk to where 600 shoes will have been collected and displayed. Each pair of shoes represents 1,000 deaths in Iraq, for the latest estimated total of 600,000. There will be a prayer circle and a time of remembrance for who have died in the war so far. Monday night, February 19, at 8 pm in Common Grounds, there will be a forum on Iraq about envisioning peacemaking partnership and creating movement. The online information about the event describes the forum. " Out of the tragedies unfolding in Iraq, we lift up the witness of peacemakers seeking to: reduce violence, deliver humanitarian assistance, build constructive partnerships, and advance alternative visions of human security. We invite you to attend a forum on peacemaking efforts occurring in Iraq, the Middle East, and the United States. Come with your questions, visions, and energy for continued discussion and action! Speakers will be: Peter Dula - Assistant Professor of Religion and Culture at EMU; Jana El-Horr - DC Program Director for American Islamic Congress; Lisa Schirch - Associate Professor of Peacebuilding at CJP". R.A.I.N. (Raising Awareness on Iraq Now) is striving to educate the campus about the war that our country is currently in. Liza Heavener, a student representative of R.A.I.N. says that "Through events like 'Iraq For Sale' and the forum on Monday night we hope to gain insight ourselves as well as spread awareness on this country in the east and the situation we have heard about so much during the past few years. It is important for the student body to show their support at events like this because they are issues that are happening in our lifetime. it is our responsibility to be aware of these current issues."
