Answer The Call

Here we are entering yet another new semester of school. First year students finally feel comfortable with their many original "acquaintances" and seniors are getting nervous about entering the real world in a few short months. But for all of us not concerned about whether or not we have those final three credits to graduate, classes go on. As well, Weather Vane goes on and in the fashion that is the Weather Vane we can always use more help and ideas.

This semester has shown our most stocked staff in years. Almost every page-editing position is filled, we have every management position filled, and we finally have more than one copy editor. As expected we need writers: staff writers, contributing writers, opinion writers, maybe even ghost writers; we need you all.

Not only do we need scholarly skills, we need intellectual minds. Thinkers, dreamers, and critics answer the call to join the Weather Vane staff and contribute to one of the few student-run institutions on this campus. If you're not happy with the work we're doing, join in and let us know what can be done! If you live to soak up every word and picture on these pulp-made pages, shoot us an email and let us know; then join as a writer, columnist, or editor. The options abound!

Thirty years from now, we'll pull out yellowed newspaper clippings and glance down only to see ourselves at ripe, young ages featured in "On the Sidewalk." Perhaps some of us were "Players of the Week" or our art project was featured on the "Style Page." But how nice would it be to look down and remember how you spent two hours interviewing a prison inmate and then wrote a breathtaking story on their life and dreams. Better yet, you took every picture in the Oct. 2006 edition of the Weather Vane and then proceeded to write a scathing letter to the editor about the condition of the bathrooms in Oakwood. We want to reiterate the potential that every student has at EMU to make themselves heard through the Weather Vane.

The truth is that even if you don't feel comfortable joining the staff, the Weather Vane can always use ideas. It's impossible for the small staff of twelve or so students to be completely in tune with all the happenings on our campus. So, if you see or hear about something exciting going on that you believe should be covered, send us an email. The 'Vane strives to be a comprehensive voice for this campus through which students, faculty, and staff can partake in achieving this goal; maybe by joining the staff or maybe just sending off an email alerting the 'Vane to something you feel is important.
