A New Year
We would like to present everyone with the first issue of the Weather Vane for the year. As the new editors-in-chief for 2006, we've been struggling through learning the inner workings of the Weather Vane. With the supreme confidence and guidance of Heather Nyce, our former editor-in-chief, we're slowly gathering the resources to make this year an exciting one for the Vane. We've spent countless hours up at the Weather Vane office, sitting on couches, in front of computers, and sweating over books, pretending to know exactly what we're doing. Dick Benner, our faculty advisor, is also proving to be a valuable asset in our education process. Expectations are high and hopes are higher between the two of us, and we hope you, as the EMU community, will help to make it a great year for the Weather Vane. We also hope as the Weather Vane staff that we can make it a great year for the EMU community.
If there is one thing that I have learned in my short 19 years on this earth it is that being an informed person is a good life choice. My goal this year as co-editor-in-chief is to enable you as students, faculty and staff of EMU to become informed citizens of this community. From the weekly CAC movie to our sports teams to the news that affects you, the staff of the Weathervane will do our best to inform you.
I was born and raised in Hilltown, Pennsylvania, a small insignificant barely-suburb of Philadelphia. As I grew up I developed a love for life, family, God, and of course the Eagles. I first became interested in journalism as a senior in high school when I joined the school's newspaper as a writer. How, two years later, I find myself the co-editor of this paper I haven't the faintest idea, but I am looking forward to working with Jake and the rest of the staff to produce a quality paper.
Shalom - Dan Landes
I grew up in Northern Indiana, in the small, very Mennonite town of Goshen. I was born in Philadelphia but moved to Goshen when I was four. Now 15 years later, I find myself co-editor-in-chief of the Weather Vane here at EMU. I always liked reading as a younger kid and to this day reading still captivates my imagination. This love for reading, and the ridiculous amount of English majors on my mom's side of the family, have led me to a life of journalism - at least, a year of it. I recently declared English as my major and hope to someday pursue a career editing for a publishing company.
I thoroughly enjoy life at EMU: the friends, the faculty, Harrisonburg, the valley, the work, the cafeteria, and avoiding the work and cafeteria. But in all honesty, I'm truly looking forward to working with Dan Landes and the Weather Vane staff. I hope EMU will continue to support and riffle through, if not read, the Weather Vane this year.
Cheers - Jake King
