Ressler Directs First Production
"What is justice?" This is the question addressed in student director Kevin Ressler's first EMU production, "Death and the Maiden."
The play is set in post-dictatorial Chile, and has three characters: Paulina, Gerardo, and Dr. Roberto Miranda. After the dictator is overthrown and democracy is beginning to be implemented, Gerardo is named by the president to a commission. Paulina, however, disagrees with the set-up of the commission, and there begins the conflict. The play looks at the battle between truth and perceptions, and at guilt and how law is restored.
This is Ressler's first production in the position of director, and he said he has been "blessed with actors who are all very interested in the show." There are two freshmen actors, Caleb Johnson and Michael Heatwole, and one senior actor, Amber Showalter, with her first lead. The production will also be taking place in the Studio Theater, in a old style of seating called "promenade seating" that allows for only 80 seats. It is a "very unique use of an already unique space," said Ressler, and has been challenging. However, these were his choices, and in spite of the obstacles faced, he feels that it is a well-done production.
There is one thing that audience members should know before enjoying "Death and the Maiden," and that is the presence of a gun and a knife, and some loud noises throughout the play. This is advertised on publicity posters and will be posted outside the theater.
The play will run Oct. 27-29, next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, at 7:30 each night. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the EMU Box Office and, if not sold out, will also be on sale at the door. Seats are limited, so it may be preferable to buy tickets in advance.
