Guatemala relief dinner
Last night Martin House held a dinner to raise relief funds for the Central American country of Guatemala, a place where many EMU students have traveled during cross-cultural experiences. Guatemala has been devastated by massive flooding and landslides caused by days of heavy rains over the past weeks. The Guatemala Relief Dinner, with a suggested donation of $5 per person, was attended by over 100 people. The menu included black beans, rice, and tortillas, among other traditional dishes. Over $900 was raised, and money is still being collected, to be sent to Mennonite Central Committee's relief efforts. One Martin House resident, junior Jenna Martin, said that they "were surprised by how many people came. There was a huge line running out the door and down the sidewalk."
Writer's Read: Denise Giardina
Novelist Denise Giardina will present the second Writer's Read of the fall semester. Giardina is a native of West Virginia whose published works include "Good King Harry," "Storming Heaven," and "Saints and Villains." This particular program is unique for EMU in that it is the first to be co-sponsored by the Language and Literature Department and an outside source, in this case the Green Valley Book Fair. Giardina's reading will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 5:30 p.m. in Martin Chapel. The program, which includes dinner and the reading, is $12, and $5 for students with ID. Tickets should be bought at the EMU Box Office in advance.
