Students suffering from the Harrisonburg weekend blues, can find the cure in nearby Charlottesville.
Last weekend many EMU students made a 60 mile trek to enjoy the sights and sounds of Nickel Creek live in concert at the newly constructed Charlottesville Pavilion. Charlottesville has both the population and the venues to attract big-name bands, making the town a frequent stop for top-level entertainers like Nickel Creek and the Charlottesville-native Dave Matthews Band.
The main stage is not the only place to find music. Charlottesville offers a plethora of clubs and restaurants that feature quality live entertainment from the full spectrum of musical genres. The critically acclaimed and deceptively named Brazilian Girls (they are not Brazilian and only one member of the four-person group is female) took the stage at the Star Hill Music Hall on Saturday night, pumping international-flavored beats onto the packed dance floor. While being age 21 or over is a plus for enjoying Charlottesville's happening nightlife, many clubs cater to younger audiences.
Given the top overall rating in the Unites States by Frommer's Cities Ranked and Rated, Charlottesville's metropolitan area boasts a lot more than excellent nightlife. The centerpiece to Charlottesville's historic downtown area is its brick-paved pedestrian mall. Lined with over 120 shops, the mall is a shopper's paradise. A day of bargain-hunting wearies the feet and leaves the stomach grumbling for a meal. Any one of the mall's 30 restaurants provide a quick remedy for these discomforts and the wide variety of styles means that everyone can find a place that suits their taste and their checkbook. Many restaurants include the option of al fresco dining and offer a full menu of the Charlottesville's famous local vintage.
Home to many historical buildings, including Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, Charlottesville and the surrounding area is a haven for history buffs. The local museums explore the rich history and culture that forms the foundation for modern Charlottesville.
