New intramural tournaments to take place soon

This fall, two new intramural sports will take place along with all the old favorites. There is one catch, though--they will not be in the traditional form.

In past years there have been intramurals for many sports on campus. Students have been wondering--what about sand volleyball? Their wait will be over in a few weeks. On Oct. 8, the first annual sand volleyball tournament, a one-day event, will take place on the courts next to Hillside and Roselawn dormitories. Signups started the weekend of Sept.16 and continued through Sept. 26, with the captain's meeting taking place that day at 8 p.m. Registration was done through the recreational sports link on the EMU website.

Senior Kristin Shoemaker is captain of the "White Chocolate" team and said, "I am looking forward to playing some good volleyball with my team. I hope that this tournament will spark some more interest in the sport." Shoemaker is hoping that a lot of students turn out for the tournament so that there will be some good competition.

Shoemaker was also excited about the new conditions of the courts: "I am really glad that the Physical Plant has put an effort into repairing the volleyball courts because they have been in poor condition," she said. With the newly repaired courts, the excitement of playing in the sand, and the general fun of good competition, students hope that the intramural volleyball tournament will be successful enough to be repeated in future years.

Golf is one varsity sport that EMU doesn't have but in which there is still a high interest. Students who want to show off their Tiger Woods-like skills will be able to do so during the intramural golf tournament, which will take place on Oct. 2 at Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg.

Registration, as with the volleyball tournament, began on Sept. 16 and ran until Sept. 26, being done through the recreational sports website. The tournament's first tee-off time will be at 1:18 p.m. The tournament will be a team event and will be played by "best ball." This means that the two members of each team will both tee off, and from there the golfers will chose the best-hit ball and play from there. Recreational sports is paying for two-thirds of the costs with the golfers paying the rest. The results from both of these tournaments will be featured in a future issue of the Weather Vane.
