Bikers remember Joe Shenk
A 50-mile bike ride this Saturday will honor missionary Joe Shenk, who died in July at age 67. Shenk, principal of the Mennonite Theological College of East Africa in Musoma, Tanzania, was hit by a charcoal truck during his morning run, and died from the resulting injuries. The memorial ride was organized by Phil Kniss, pastor of Park View Mennonite Church, who described Shenk as "an avid runner and distance bicyclist." Each cyclist was invited to contribute $50 for a memorial fund to be donated to the Mennonite Theological College where Shenk worked. Students participating in the ride will include Ben Stutzman, Kurt Rosenburger, and Andrea Kniss.
Constitution Day celebrated
In accordance with a new federal mandate for educational institutions that receive federal funds for a fiscal year, an official Constitution Day Celebration will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at 4 p.m. in SC 106. The celebration, organized by Mark Metzler Sawin, assistant professor of history, centers around a lecture/discussion format. Sawin and Associate Professor of International and Political Studies Dan Wessner will take a pop-culture look at the preamble and discuss the history of the Constitution and its continuing impact.
Provost Beryl Brubaker noted that there are many laws which an institution like EMU must comply with. As an educational event with little implied cost, she does not see the new law as a burden or a conflict of interest.
Intramurals begin

Men's basketball, with six A League and four B League teams, also started on Wednesday.
