If the chapel task force's recommendations are accepted, a normal Friday presentation like this one would be pushed back an hour.

Last fall the President appointed a task force of faculty, staff and students to consider a variety of issues related to university chapel. Their work is almost complete and the chapel committee will consider their recommendations this spring.

One of the recommendations is to change the time for chapel on Wednesday and Friday to 11:00-11:30 instead of 10:00-10:30 (with three classes before chapel and the dining hall hours changing to 11:30-1:30) in order to provide a break in the class schedule at a more opportune time and to encourage interaction over lunch about the chapel event.

The committee is also presenting two options for when to start classes following chapel, either 11:40 or 12:00. The rationale for 12:00 is to alleviate the rush to class after chapel and provide a time for fellowship and reflection following chapel. Most classes would then be over at either 4:30 or 4:50 p.m., depending on which option is chosen.

In order for the Registrar's Office to meet its timetable for scheduling classes for next year, the committee needs to make a decision soon about the recommendations described above. The plan is to set up a web forum for discussion, conducting an opinion poll, and using the results of the poll along with the forum discussion to provide information to the President's Cabinet, which will then make the decisions about the schedule.

Activities schedule:
February 13-20 - Discussion on the web forum
February 21-27 - Web poll
March 1 - President's Cabinet makes decision

Additional recommendations of the task force will be discussed in other venues this spring. The web forum is now open for your comments at http://www.emu.edu/chapelforum.

We encourage you to use the web forum to identify and debate the pros and cons on scheduling. We will notify you when the forum is closed and the polling begins. Thank you for your participation.
