Letter to the Editor: Show a Little Discretion

Free Sunil!! Wow, What is this paper coming to? I really hate to slam you guys because the job you do and the hours you put in just to make the paper are more blood than sweat. I will begin by commending you on the hard work that you do. Not many would even think of it.

In as much as I would like to recognize the efforts you put into your craft I have to question, personally, why you would run a story like this. No offense to Sunil who I would consider a good guy on campus, but what image does this portray to the wider community that faithfully subscribes to your paper? I am not talking of the students here, but the parents who have kids coming here, Mennonite and Non-Mennonite faithful, church leaders, administration etc. In short the guys that actually make this place tick? I can only imagine how Brad Miller and his counterparts begin to explain this to potential students, Ohh! Oops sorry students who just changed their minds about enrolling. When you peddle education a good product is only as good as its bad apples. I might be an archaic stickler for getting what you deserve or someone who holds an unpopular opinion but in my view, you guys could do better.

You are the voice of the campus and you are essentially the official outlet of information on campus. Your role is to inform the public on what they need to know, but, in that spirit, also remember that there are repercussions that come with your "journalism" on this campus' future. In the past this paper has been responsible for seemingly slight slips here and there that will at times send some of the bigwigs on Campus Center 3rd to grow more white hair than they need. You need to embrace you profession and display quality print. There is a big difference between a quality paper and one that displays gutter press. You are toying with that line.

I become especially indignant seeing that you have a reporter, (actually an Editor) available to cover Sunils' bail fundraiser, but, you have none or don't send one to cover the MLK event on Monday. Even Prez Swartz knew it was important enough to attend. It is not the job of the students organizing the event to write the article but yours. I guess there is a different standard and priority that your paper has concerning events. But in the end I am only one man with a strong opinion. I think you need to reexamine your role.
