Letter to the Editors:

Glad to have graduated

I would just like to say that I was very disappointed to hear that Ken Roth is being terminated. I think our school needs to look at the bigger picture. I remember when rumors were going around campus a year or two ago that his contract might not be renewed because he was "too easy." First, I want to say that Ken Roth was one of the only professors that I could listen to for an entire class. He brought humor into his lectures and he kept them interesting. His class was the only eight a.m. class that I not only got up for, but looked forward to.

It saddens me that he was considered too easy of a professor because so many students did well in his class. To me that says that he is doing his job. If they want to make the class more academically challenging, then they should adjust the curriculum but not the teacher. Why can't they be honest about why they really don't want him there?

Coming in as a freshman student second semester was a hard adjustment, but Ken was someone that I felt like I could always talk to. He was in his office and his posted hours were actually decent, unlike some teachers who are only free a few hours a week.

While I know that Ken isn't going to fight this because it isn't enjoyable being in an environment where you feel like you aren't wanted. I want the EMU people who made this decision to know that they are making a huge mistake. Ken was a unique teacher who I enjoyed who made EMU stand out as a good place. He made students want to learn and made it easier to pay attention in class, which meant less evenings stressing that no matter how much I studied, I wouldn't do well. Ken was there for 9 years and now they are letting him go. How sad that a Mennonite school can give such a sad excuse for letting someone go that has been on their staff that long. Does that mean that other teachers are going to have to start making sure some students fail or else have to worry that they will be the next to be let go for being "too easy?" If that's what education is coming to, I'm thankful that I graduated from EMU already.
