African-American History Month
The celebration of "African-American History Month: We've Come this Far by Faith" here at EMU, kicks off Wednesday, Feb. 1 with special guest speaker Angie B. Williams. Williams, an ordained Pastor for Special Ministries in the Mennonite Church, is author of the "Joy in Adversity: Living Free Amidst the Storms of Life." Chapel begins at 10 a.m. in Lehman Auditorium.
Pool and ping-pong tournaments
Sign-ups are going on now and will last until Feb. 7 in the Game Room for the pool and ping-pong tournament, to be held Feb. 10 at 9 p.m. The entry cost is $1 with food and door prizes available for all contestants. OrangeBand: party and plan
OrangeBand, an organization dedicated to promoting civil discourse, social capital, and civic engagement by getting people talking about what they care about, kicksoff this weekend. On Friday, Jan. 27, OrangeBand Bandstand hosts a benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. at Guzman's, Harrisonburg's newest club. Live music features Midnight Spaghetti, Dangus Kahn and the Tornadoes and Intense City. On Saturday, Jan. 28, is the Anti Apathy Planning event, from noon through 6 p.m. at JMU's Taylor Hall. Planning for The Anti-Apathy Campaign in March will take place. Additional information can be found at www.OrangeBand.org.
"Ferdinand the Bull" at EMU
The award-winning Barter Children's Theater Players will present a musical rendition of the classic children's book Ferdinand the Bull at EMU this Friday. Lehman Auditorium opens its doors at 7:30 p.m. for the 50-minute show. The cost is $4. The Barter Theater is the official state theater of Virginia and its children's shows are a rarity.
