Mike's movie guide

The greatest adventure in the universe begins when the world ends.

Earthling Arthur Dent learns that his planet is about to be demolished and his only chance for survival is to hitch a ride on a passing spacecraft. He discovers many things on his journey, but the most important is that everything you need to know can be found in one book: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The movie stars many fan favorites including Sam Rockwell (Matchstick Men), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), John Malkovich (Rounders), and Mos Def, and is rated PG.

If you have not guessed it by now, the campus movie this weekend is "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." The movie is based on the wonderfully creative and downright hilarious science fiction book by the recently deceased Douglas Adams.

Although the movie doesn't quite capture the genius of the book, it still is a two hour joy ride through the galaxy of Adams' seemingly endless imagination that has the visual effects and enough off the wall moments to keep any viewer entertained. Critics have called this movie many things including improbable, random, absurd, playful, wildly imaginative and (my personal favorite) deflating of all pretense.

For any newcomers to campus who have yet to hear of the campus movies every weekend, let me give you the basics. The movie is shown both Friday and Saturday nights in Science Center Room 106, and the cost is $1.50. The EMU movie price is much cheaper than the normal $8 ticket price at the downtown Regal Theater, though you will have to wait a little while since the movies shown on campus are not new releases. It is quite the steal to catch a flick on campus during your stay at EMU for many reasons. Here are three: one, other movies cost too much (read a few lines up); two, gas prices are too high to drive anywhere; and three, boredom. You might as well accept the fact that you will get bored some night over some weekend and a movie will be just the thing you need.
