Flag art exhibit in Hartzler
Bursting into the first weekend scene here at EMU was a different kind of art by a different kind of artist.
Graphic design was the art, San Yoon was the artist and the Hartzler Library Gallery was the place to be last Sunday, September 4th. Students, professors, and friends and family of Yoon milled around checking out the vibrant colors and designs of Yoon's graphics.
Yoon is a professor of graphic design at JMU, but she also takes her graphic designing abilities into the Harrisonburg community as well. She has had clients from the Oasis Gallery, in downtown Harrisonburg, to the World Water Council in Tokyo Japan.
Yoon's art is a colorful expression of not only pictures and designs, but words as well. "Lines, shapes and colors are the components which I manipulate to form my works," stated Yoon on Sunday. Yoon wants to be able to communicate the information from her clients into public, useful art by incorporating the necessary words, shapes and pictures into a piece that will be viewed or used for information by many people. Yoon also does pieces for a more purely artistic purpose as well. Some of these pieces are in series such as the Water Waters Life series or the American Flag series. The Water Waters Life series was one of her first series and is a very interesting, yet simple representation of how water helps a variety of life.
Pieces in the American Flag series are more recent works of Yoon's. They are a variety of flags in an array of colors and shapes that represent significant years and events from the 1920's to the present.
All of these pieces of art and more will be on display in the Hartzler Library Gallery, located on the third floor of the library, until October 7th. With a different form of art brings new thoughts and ideas. Yoon's art is different yet beautiful and opens the mind to new possibilities in creativity. Says Yoon, "I like to focus creativity on eye-catching results, and graphic design is what I do."
