Homecoming wrap-up
Women's volleyball was edged out by Messiah College's Lady Falcons 3-2. Messiah started the day off right by winning the first two games against the Royals, but EMU battled back, forcing Messiah into a fifth game. Game scores were 30-27, 30-16, 26-30, 17-30, and 15-12.
Men's soccer fell to Bridgewater 1-0. Bridgewater sophomore Joel Marsh scored the only goal of Saturday's game at the 53rd minute, giving his team the edge they needed to secure victory. EMU had many scoring opportunities, including a goal by freshman Jared Byler that was called back due to a foul, but was unable to tie the score.
Royals cross country hosted the Virginia State Meet at the Peak View cross country course Saturday. The men's team placed third of six, while the women only had one runner compete. Washington and Lee University won both races, but EMU junior Kevin Beachy finished fourth in 28:42. Sophomore Tim Harder finished 17th, sophomore Pete Nelson placed 18th, junior Caleb Yoder came in 19th, and freshman Lars Akerson rounded out the scoring with a 34th-place finish. Kara Glick, the only competitor for the Lady Royals, finished 28th in 28:09.
Women's soccer fell to Virginia Wesleyan 1-0. Wesleyan is ranked #10 in the nation.
Lady Royals field hockey lost again. The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins defeated EMU in a tight 3-2 match, with the Marlins' junior Cara Byrd scoring twice, including the game-winning goal with just over six minutes remaining. Laura Weidema scored the other goal for the Marlins. Junior Jonalyn Denlinger put the Royals on the scoreboard with both goals credited to her name. Freshman Megan Koster saved 13 shots in goal for Virginia Wesleyan.
