Alum's peace speech places first

2004 EMU graduate Jeremy Yoder, an Environmental Science major, won first place in the bi-national C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest with his paper entitled "Flooding Isengard: Why a Peace Church Should be a Green Church." This is the second year in a row that an EMU student has placed first; senior math major Zachary Kurtz won the award last year with a speech entitled "U.S. War Tax-A Taxing Dilemma."

The annual contest provides students with the opportunity to compose and deliver a speech that applies Christian principles of peacemaking to contemporary social issues. Yoder won first prize (which includes a cash reward) at EMU in April 2004, then competed in an intercollegiate competition with the winners from other students of Mennonite-related colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.

Mennonite Central Committee sponsors the competition, which was established in honor of C. Henry Smith, a Bluffton college faculty member from 1914-1946. Smith is well-known for his numerous books on Mennonite history and his particular attention to the peace commitments of the Mennonite tradition.

Town Meetings are an opportunity for anyone on campus - students, faculty, or staff - to pose questions to the president, voice a concern, ask about the status of something, or give an affirmation.
