Morris formalizes Cadiz options
Marie Morris, EMU vice president and undergraduate academic dean, signed a consortium agreement with the University of Cadiz in Spain over spring break that will enable EMU Spanish majors to study at the university for a semester.
Moira Rogers, associate professor of Language and Literature, initiated the relationship with the University of Cadiz and is overseeing the current group of students in Spain. Spanish majors are required to study Spanish in a foreign country, and before this year their options were limited to the EMU South American cross cultural or the Brethren Colleges Abroad program in Barcelona. This new agreement will give students another option.
"Cadiz is a smaller city than Barcelona. It is a better fit with the EMU/Mennonite ethos. It is more rural," said Morris. This program also allows students to live in home-stay situations.
For Spanish majors, the cost of the program is comparable to the cost of any other cross cultural. Students who are not Spanish majors who want to go on the program do not get institutional aid.
Students in the program take a full course load at the university after an intensive language and culture program. "The teachers were very impressed with the language experiences and seriousness of the EMU students this semester," said Morris. "They are positive about the agreement."
