"Alterations" art embodied

A riot of color hangs on the Hartzler Library's gallery walls. The vibrant colors of the artwork created by local artist Cynthia Greene were put on display on Jan. 16 at the gallery opening. It is a striking collection of a variety of mediums ranging from lithograph, to oil paint, to cut/patterned material, all of which revolve around a central theme. The quote Greene used on her first lithograph, "Those who allow God to alter their lives to his will experience peace and security," embodies this theme.

Without this artist's note, little connection between the works is evident aside from sewing. Paintings of stylized scissors, abstract 3-D oil paintings, and Andy Warhol-reminiscent prints would seem an unlikely combination. The originality of Greene's symbolism and pleats of canvas, however, hold much more meaning than simple aesthetic pleasure.

The exhibit, which will remain open until Feb. 4, has many provocative pieces. The display's warm vibrance serves as a bright escape from a grey winter day. The art gallery is located on the 3rd floor of Hartzler Library and is open during the Library's hours of service.
