Letter to the Editors:

Be the real you

In February of 2003, I wrote a letter to the Weather Vane, stating my concern for students on campus who may be gay or lesbian, and who feel that they must keep their identity hidden. I offered to be an accepting mom or grandmom away from home for any students who would like to have someone who would listen to them and share with them in confidence. I would like to renew that offer at this time.

I have a wonderful gay son who attended EMC years ago, and he felt that he was living in a hostile environment. Although times have changed, I have the impression that there are still many unaccepting people around ... even in churches and church institutions where those who are "different" should feel the greatest acceptance. I am hoping that "A Safe Place" may again become an active group on campus, as it was in 2003.

My husband and I, both retired teachers, live next to EMU campus. You may see me at sports events, dramas, concerts, luncheons, and CTP events. (My husband has Parkinson's, so he doesn't attend many of those events.) I love being around young people. You are welcome in our home, where you can feel comfortable being "the real you." You are welcome to come and dialogue, even if you don't agree with me. You may contact me on email (rubylehman@yahoo.com) or by phone at 432-7205.
