Freshman Lisa King fends off two opponents during a home match last Saturday. The Royals field hockey team was defeated 3-1.

With only seven returning players from the 2003 ODAC championship team, this season will present a challenging transition for the Lady Royals.

EMU has had a decorated field hockey history, but this year’s team is ready to be realistic about their expectations. They hope to use this season as a rebuilding period, realizing that they may not attain the success level of years past. Nevertheless, Coach Brenda Bechler and her players remain in good spirits about the season, which may bring surprises as the team develops and grows as a unit.

Leading this year’s squad are co-captains Jonalyn Denlinger (top scorer) and Lisa Ehst. Though only 12 members strong, their team remains optimistic. The Lady Royals have suffered defeats to both Dickinson and Gettysburg in the past week.
