Kevin Longenecker, Shirley Yoder, and Loren Swartzendruber fielded challenges for 90 minutes Tuesday morning from eight community members upset with the "Democracy Now!" cutback. Alumnus Ben Wise tearfully described the loss of what he saw as the only radio program around to give balance to mainstream media. He noted that "Democracy Now!" is one news show that was not "beating the drums of war" in the buildup for the invasion of Iraq.
Station manager Jon Kennel-Kauffmann said, "While we have a concern for truth and justice, the program does not come at those from a faith perspective." One protester responded with "You play classical music all day long, and that has nothing to do with the faith perspective."
President Swartzendruber spoke at length on donor issues and defended his policy of informing the WEMC Board of Reference of threats from donors concerning WEMC programming. Swartzendruber maintained that ultimate control over programming remains in the hand of Kennel-Kauffmann.
