Letter to the Editors:

Unreasonable fines

I came to EMU from Hesston College to be a nursing major.  I was late in deciding where I wanted to go to school so I lived in Roselawn my first semester here.  When I arrived there were holes in the tiles, big ugly streaks across the walls, and my mattress cover was ripped so badly it almost would not cover the mattress.  I moved in, signed the form that I was aware of these damages, and then I proceeded to go about the semester.  Because I am a nursing major I was NEVER in my room.  I only slept there.  I was always studying other places or hanging out with my friends in their rooms.  Well, when the semester came to an end I was shocked that there was a $30 charge.  I guess they found a 2 by 3 inch scratch on the very bottom of the OUTSIDE of my dorm room door.  How could I have made a dent on the outside of my door if I was hardly ever there?  Also, who decided that to fix that scratch it would cost $30?  Did someone who is a professional in door scratches come and make an estimate?  Or does EMU simply charge students every year for damages that are a part of living in an old unrenovated dorm?  Is EMU ever going to fix the scratch in my old dorm room door?  I doubt it.

Each year students are charged for problems with the room that will never be fixed.  What about the student who was charged for the mattress cover that I slept on which was in deplorable condition?  Where did their money go?  I think EMU needs to be more careful before handing out charges where the money never actually reaches the item that the students are being charged for.
