Culen, Sager, Lentz Score 30, 29, 19

Mike Culen, Jason Sager and Jason Lentz each scored career high points on Sunday to lead the men’s basketball team to a 94-90 victory over Emory and Henry, which is currently ranked sixth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The win improved the Royals’ record to 4-10 overall, 2-6 in conference play.

Culen, a senior guard, scored 30 points, including five three-pointers for EMU. Sager contributed 29 points and 13 rebounds. The sophomore also had four assists. Jeremy Newman and E.J. Arrington each had six and five respectively. Named the ODAC Freshman of the Year during the 2001-02 season, Arrington scored eight points for the Royals. Freshman center Lentz finished the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

On Saturday the Royals were defeated by Guilford College by a final score of 95-79. Sager and Arrington each had rebounds in the double figures, Sager with 11 and Arrington with 10. The pair also led the offense as Sager led the team with 19 points, and Arrington contributed 18. Guilford is ranked fourth in the ODAC. The Royals will face Guilford again on Feb. 8 in Greensboro, N.C.

EMU is currently tied with Bridgewater for first in the ODAC for blocked shots, averaging over four per game. They are also ranked first in assists, with 17.71 per game, and they are second in the conference in steals and offensive rebounds. Sager is the fourth-ranked player in the conference with an average of 15.8 points per game. Also ranked for the Royals are Arrington in the number seven spot, and Culen rounding out the top 10.

The Royals hope to improve their record over the coming days against ODAC rival Bridgewater on Saturday at 7 p.m. at EMU. Bridgewater is currently the fifth-ranked team in the conference, and a win could bump the Royals up in the standings from their current ranking of ninth.
