Gross explores “richness” of music

This Saturday evening, Martin Chapel will be filled with sweet soprano sounds.
Anne Gross, instructor of music and voice at EMU, will be giving a recital. The Jan. 17 program will feature performances from Antonio Vivaldi’s cantata "Nulla in mundo pax sincera." Gross will also perform selections from Richard Strauss and Frank Liszt.
Gross is thrilled to be performing these pieces for her recital. "Some of these are songs I've wanted to sing for years, others were new discoveries. The Vivaldi motet has been a favorite for a long time," she said.
Gross has performed several other times at EMU. "This would be my seventh solo recital at EMU; I give one each year. In addition to the classical recitals, I've also presented several solo cabaret evenings with a jazz trio," said Gross.
Gross looks forward to performing this recital, but she also wants it to be a learning experience for students. "I love to sing, so I perform as often as possible. I also think it's important for my students to hear me ‘practice what I preach,’ so I'm providing learning opportunities for them."
Gross has a diverse musical background. As a child, she grew up with a love for music. "I've been surrounded by music my entire life, so I never thought not to love it! …My parents worked hard to be sure all their children could study music–and we all played at least two instruments and sang…"said Gross.
Gross’s love for music has continued throughout her life. She received her undergraduate degree in vocal performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and her graduate degree in vocal performance as well from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Before coming to EMU in 1997, she was an administrator, tour director, and musical supervisor of the African Children’s Choir.
Gross asserts that music has much to offer for everyone. "Music holds such richness that we owe it to ourselves to explore and take time to absorb its gifts. I can't imagine going through a day without hearing or creating music."
Admission is free to the 7:30 p.m. concert; however, donations to support the EMU music student scholarship fund will be accepted.
Steven W. Sachs, professor of music at EMU, will accompany Gross on the piano.
