More wins than women
Despite a single digit roster, the women’s basketball team trounced Villa Julie College last night. The Lady Royals scored the first 27 points of the game, and led 35-7 at half time.
EMU now stands at 11-1, 7-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Carrie Grandstaff scored 15 points to lead Royal’s scorers. Stephanie Mathews added 12 points.
Villa Julie, coming off a winless 2002-2003 season, fell to 1-11.
The win came after EMU snuck by Emory and Henry in a tight ODAC match-up on Saturday, Jan. 10.
With just minutes left, Amanda Renalds, who finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds, scored to bring the Lady Royals even with Emory and Henry.
The game’s score was 60-56. Sophomore Carrie Grandstraff also registered 15 points and contributed four rebounds to the victory. Shantee Bryant, a junior guard, added nine assists for the Royals. The win brought EMU’s record to 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the ODAC.
Saturday’s victory followed another tight ODAC win on Tuesday, Jan. 6 over the Generals of Washington & Lee. Sophomore Laura Ludholtz led the offense, contributing 27 points and six steals. Stephanie Mathews registered 13 rebounds. The final score of the game was 68-65 favoring the Lady Royals.
After losing two players over Christmas break, shortening their roster to just eight players, the team faced their first defeat of the season on Sunday, Jan. 4. Roanoke College ended the undefeated season with victory of 64-52 over the hosting Royals.
The Lady Royals face ODAC foe Bridgewater on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in a home match. Play continues on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Lynchburg.
