Letter to the Editors:
Alumna gives belated gratitude
In the more recent history of EMU I have heard extensive discussions on the freedom of academic teaching, beliefs and values of various professors, and the dismissal of faculty and staff based on their apparent unparallel nature to that of EMU’s vision, mission, or values. I have also heard much student grumbling on issues such as the community lifestyle commitment, unsatisfactory food quality, insufficient dorms, and the list may go on, as it did for me not so long ago as an EMU student myself. But in the midst of attempting to continually improve EMU and to strive for its perfection, let us not forget what makes EMU such a wonderful and valuable place.
Having just received acceptance into medical school, I am deeply appreciative of my undergraduate education, although would not have spoken so even just one year ago. When asked by my father last year if EMU was the right choice of schools, my reply was not a concrete one, but now, in hindsight, I know the definite answer to that question was yes.
EMU provided a place for me to explore and engage in many areas while also requiring the necessary foundation for my pre-med education. Now having taken classes at three universities, I can see the professors at EMU are the most compassionate, available, and dedicated to their students. We mustn’t forget that sometimes the professors who speak out are the very ones that drive us to become our best.
I am very grateful for the faculty on campus that pushed the envelope to get me to think for myself and work hard toward my goals. Many of them helped me through tough times and made a huge positive impact on my education and experience at EMU. I want to thank all of my professors and the MANY other people on campus who are at EMU solely for the students. I had four years of your dedicated service and I am most grateful. Let’s not forget the significance of EMU. And for you students… don’t wait till after your graduation to realize the value of those around you!
