With the upcoming renovation to the Suter Science Center, the Eastern Mennonite University Physical Plant has been searching for creative ways to address the upcoming space shortage, especially the need for faculty offices. One way that EMU has started this process is with the acquisition of two 64 feet long recreational vehicles (colloquially known as FEMA Trailers).
Continue Reading...This Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., the JMU Convocation Center will be flooded with people awaiting to see the Most Rev. Desmond Tutu receive the Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence award, JMU’s Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence’s highest honor. Archbishop Tutu will give an award presentation entitled “Goodness Is Powerful.” Entrance to the award ceremony is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5 p.m and guests are encouraged to arrive early, as the seating capacity of 6,000 is expected to fill quickly.

As you the readers may have guessed from the last WeatherVane, Dylan and I care a lot about activism and being involved on campus. I for one feel like my college experience is not complete if I’m not involved in a group that is trying to affect change or enhance the lives of someone somewhere. Recently, my own thoughts on these topics have flown to what I consume, where it comes from, and whom it comes from. I began to think about what I own, and I realized that a majority of my clothing, food, and who-knows-what-else comes from underpaid overworked workers, in many cases little children.

Style
Gonzo theater is a monthly event that takes place in EMU’s Studio Theater. Each month it starts when a theme or inspiration is displayed for several days in the lower level of the Campus Center. During this time, students can go look at the inspiration and write five minute plays. The students who write the plays do not have to put their names on their scripts, often opting for anonymity or made-up names. The plays are given out to student directors who have no more than 24 hours to find actors and one hour to practice. The evening of the performances, actors still have scripts in their hands. Few costumes or props are used. It is very relaxed.
